Heading into homeschool conference season, heavy on our minds is what we want to teach our children in the coming year.

There is so much material on the market.  Some of it good, some of it not so good.  It requires a great deal of research, prayer and discernment to select curriculum for our family.  More than one item purchased has not been used or used lightly and then left to collect dust on the shelf.

When I started thinking about this, the parallel with our spiritual lives jumped to mind.  There are so many books on the market: study guides, self-help, ‘Christian’ fiction…  How are we supposed to decide what we are supposed to be reading?

2 Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Reading for reading’s sake is fine, but if we’re reading to grow in the Lord, the things we’re reading need to reflect God’s glory.  The number one resource I recommend, The Bible.

Data, information and knowledge can all be gathered from multiple sources.  But wisdom,

Psalm 111:10

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.

Wisdom belongs to God and to find wisdom, we must seek Him.

Proverbs 8:11
for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.

 In 1 Kings 3, God asks Solomon what He can give Him.  Solomon, with the faith of a little child, prays, asking God for wisdom.  In response, God not only gave Solomon wisdom but also blessed him in every area of his life.  Solomon knew that every good and perfect gift was from God (James 1:17) and that God’s wisdom was more than he would ever need.

Two children’s choruses reiterate the value of seeking God’s guidance/wisdom over all other.

Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness.  And all these things shall be added unto you, allelu alleluiah.

The other one is:

The B-I-B-L-E, yes that’s the book for me.  I stand alone on the Word of God, the B-I-B-L-E.
The B-L-O-O-D, that Jesus shed for me, I stand alone on the Cornerstone, the B-L-O-O-D!

Where do you stand?  Where are you finding your wisdom?  If it’s not in God’s word, take another look at what you’re reading.
