Pocket Vibrations

Our family had a great day today. We walked along the waterfront, ate ribs on the boardwalk, played games and then we each went to our own activities. Just as I sat down to begin reading for my devotions, my pocket vibrated. I was being notified that someone wanted to talk to me – someone had a message that I was meant to hear. After nearly jumping out of my chair (because I rarely have a cellphone in my back pocket) I hesitated for just a moment before I moved to check the message. I had sat down in order to spend some time with God; reading, praying and interpreting His Word. This pocket vibration was going to be a distraction. I knew that if I went online to check it out, I would get sucked in to the time vacuum that is social media. Only seconds later, the thought came to me that I get notifications all of the time. Not necessarily pocket vibrations, but a small still voice that whispers things like, “read My Word”, “take time to pray”, “rest in Me” and “trust”.

Here’s my priority check: how quickly do I respond to those pocket vibrations and how quickly do I answer God’s message that I need to be spending more time with Him?

I had a totally different post planned for today, but the alarm for this message seemed to get louder and louder the more I thought about it. Why will I put down my Bible to read a text message? Am I as quick to dismiss a text message to read my Bible? I needed this reminder – and I’ll probably need it again tomorrow.

Romans 8:5

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

Romans 12:1-2

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
