Pre-Op
If you have ever had to have surgery, you know that there are several steps leading up to your big day. I am scheduled to have a hospital stay surgery in two weeks. I have lost track of how many appointments I have had in the past year, in preparation for this operation. Today was my pre-op appointment. I interacted with people at reception, hospital registration, surgery registration, nurses, EKG staff, blood collection services and even parking administration. When I got home, I had serious stack of reading to do so that I will be prepared. In order for my surgery and recovery to go as planned, there are things that I need to know and things that I need to do. There are a lot of thing, in fact. The nurses were wonderful, having been through this before, they were more experienced and knowledgeable than I am. They offered counsel and answered questions, but still, I was responsible to study and learn those things that are critical to my healing.
God is so gracious in providing illustrations for me that help me to know Him better. If I need to put all of this effort into seeking information and answers about a two to four hour surgery with a six to eight week recovery, how diligently should I be committing myself to seeking information and answers that will lead me to eternal healing?
When I came home, I read all of the pamphlets and requisitions and I fully intend to follow their direction. The question and challenge I now face is, will I read and follow God’s Word with the same faithfulness?
Will you?
Hebrews 4:12
For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Joshua 1:8
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it…
Psalm 119:15-16
I meditate on Your precepts and consider Your ways. I delight in Your decrees; I will not neglect Your Word.
