The Change

Last night, I went to see Menopause, the Musical. It was a light-hearted (although somewhat crass) recounting, by four different women from four walks of life, about ‘The Change’. They sang about their changing bodies, changing moods, the change in sleep and in their relationships. There was much in the story that I could related to. The audience laughed – A LOT – and it was easy to sense how many of the packed room of women were struggling with The Change.

There was one number that I found difficult to sit through. It referenced the lack of need of relationship as you worked things out for yourself in this challenging season. The more they sang, the more uncomfortable I became. I knew that they were trying to be funny, but the message really just made me sad.

Sisters, we were created for relationship and there is one relationship that is not only always available to us, but it will never change.

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates His own love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Malachi 3:6

I the LORD do not change.

No matter how much our hormones may be wreaking havoc with our brains, we have a Solid Rock to anchor us.

Psalm 18:2

The LORD is my Rock, my Fortress and my Deliverer; my God is my Rock in whom I take refuge, my Shield and the Horn of my Salvation, my Stronghold.

There is no question that the physical changes that we go through in life can be challenging and confusing. I do not understand why some days I wake up and cry all day, while other days I have enough energy to accomplish the impossible. I do not understand, why I am struggling or what blessing is at the other side, but I have a mighty God who does.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LROD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Romans 12:1-2

There fore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.

Society tells us that we need to suffer through the menopause years. If I offer them up to God instead, as a sacrifice of faith in His abounding care for me, I might still struggle with the changes, but I don’t have to be miserable through them. I can believe that God is teaching me and perhaps the lesson is that I need to lean more on Him.

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peach of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is see, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Whatever season of change you may be in today, never forget that you do not need to go through it alone.

Hebrews 13:8, Deuteronomy 31:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever…. It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.
