The Indecisive Crow

At work the other morning, I was enjoying the sunrise through the large front windows.  Streaks of red, orange and yellow brilliantly shot through the sky as the world gradually awoke and came to life.

Once the sun was fully up, I was able to watch the birds foraging on the lawns for their breakfast.  Robins, chickadees, nuthatches, sparrows and crows were all hopping around busily accomplishing their tasks.

One crow, in particular, must have been working on his nest.  He spotted a stick (actually more like a small branch), hopped over and looked at it for a bit.  Then, he picked it up in his beak and tested the weight.  He stood there for a few seconds and then he dropped it.  Then he picked it up, then he dropped it.  Then he picked it up, then he dropped it.  Then he picked it up, hopped around a bit and then he dropped it.  This crow repeated the picking up and the dropping over and over again.  It was almost as if he could not make up his mind.

Sort of like the husband who wants to bring home the 72″ TV for the eight foot room, this crow seemed to be debating how well his decision would go over with the lady at home.  (I am, of course, assuming that it was a boy crow).

Eventually, after much deliberation, this crow finally gathered his branch, made a running start, hovered (the branch was bigger than he was), gained momentum and took flight.  He was gone.

This crow invested a great deal of time considering his decision.  He weighed his options, he walked away and thought about his choices, he deliberated before finally coming to a conclusion.  In the end, his choice was almost too much for him to carry but he persevered and worked through it.

I wonder how our decision making would compare to the crow’s?  Do we think before we act?  Do we lay out the consequences of our actions and consider the value of our choices?  Do we include others in our decision making process?

Large or small, all of our choices produce results.  If we choose not to brush our teeth we have bad breath.  If we choose to buy this, there may not be the money for that.  If we marry this person, if we have these children, if we buy this car…every decision we make effects our lives.

The biggest decision any of us will ever have to make is whether or not we will accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour.  No one can make the decision for us and no one can keep us from making the decision if it is in our heart to do so.

Deuteronomy 4:29
But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Matthew 7:7-8
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

The crow sought what he needed.  He considered it, he choose it and he committed to it.
