The Lifeguard

Under the black depths, struggling for air.  Just to sense the surface and light brings hope.

Sometimes my life is just like drowning.  The cares and concerns of this world fill my lungs and suffocate me.  It seems as though I will never reach the other side where rest and comfort wait for me.

And then I look up.

When I take my eyes off my inability to succeed and I train them on His faithfulness to care for me hope returns.

Psalm 119:81
My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my hope in your word.

With so much to do and so many demands for our time and attention, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that God already knows where we are and what we are going through.  He already knows what we need most – even when we don’t realize it ourselves.

Trusting God’s word means that we can believe that He has the best for us.  If reaching that best means that we are going to face trials in order to learn and appreciate it we need to trust that He will guide us through them.

1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

The word temptation could be substituted with the word trial.  Our temptation to react poorly to our trials is a direct reflection of how much we are trusting God to take care of us.

Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

What a wonderful promise!  To know that even when I can’t see through the darkness my Lifeguard is standing ready.  Ever vigilant to care for me.

John 12:46
I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
