Appreciate the Grey

It has rained for almost a month.  When its not raining, the skies are overcast.  Even though the temperatures are fairly warm the grey drippy days lack inspiration.

The cashier at the grocery store told me this morning that they live at the bottom of a hill.  Her sister had a plaque made for their house that read, “The Ark”.  The house is surrounded by what feels like gallons of water.

It is easy to get discouraged on grey days.  Farmers like the rain at first but then it threatens their crops.  Dads prefer the rain to shoveling snow.  The rain is great for families living on wells.  Unpaved country roads are a muddy nightmare after weeks of rain.

I commented to the cashier, as I paid my bill, that this grey day was the perfect day for a nap.  She smiled and looked up at me as she responded that she was thankful for the rain as it meant we weren’t being devastated by forest fires like provinces out west.  She continued with thankfulness for the roof over her head to protect her from the weather.

What a great attitude.  A grey day (or a whole bunch of them) means that it’s not so hot that our land is dry and burning.  A grey day (or a whole bunch of them) means that the flood waters aren’t so high that we are losing our homes.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

What an amazing God we have.  He doesn’t tell us to give thanks for the grey days but He does tell us to be thankful even during the grey days.

Thank you Lord!
