Be Strong in the Lord part 1

Joshua 6

1 Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.
2 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”
6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them…

Jericho was sealed up tightly so that the mighty nation of Israel could not penetrate its stronghold.  Verses 2 – 5 are God giving Joshua instructions and verse six is the beginning of Joshua’s obedience in this situation.  The result – God protected Israel.  The enemy was defeated and God was glorified!

At the end of the book of Epeshians, there is another set of instructions for battle.  Instructions that, if followed, will prepare us to stand firm in the LORD and give us the knowledge, tools and enouragement we need if we are going to stand strong against our enemy – the Devil.

1 Peter 5:8 describes Satan as a lion seeking whom he may devour.  A friend of mine once told me of gathering all of her children to the front door.  The door was closed.  She asked the children what they would do if they knew that on the other side of that door, there was a wild animal that wanted to devour them.  That as soon as they stepped out of that door, the beast would begin stalking them.  They might not ever see it, but its presence would pursue them incessantly.  When their guard was down, the creature would attack them and unless they knew how to fight it off, they would not only be damaged but quite possibly destroyed!  Then she asked them if they were ready to step outside the door.  Do you know what these children did?  They all stepped back.

There is great wisdom in their reaction.  Unprepared to face an enemy is a certain path to destruction.  Ephesians 6:10-18 is commonly referred to as the ‘Armour of God’ passage.  One by one, we’re going to take a look at the practical today application of these verses.  My prayer is that at the end of this little series, each one of us will be better prepared and more confident in walking strong in the LORD.

Leviticus 26:13
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk with heads held high.
