Teenage son is home from university, house is loaded with friends, summer heat and humidity are ramping up, laundry waits, dishes in the sink. I was not really surprised that sleep was eluding me. When I get busy, my mind does not seem to be able to gear down. After a few days of being overtired, my jaw started to ache. I often clench my teeth when sleeping so it just made sense to put in my bite plane. Soon the ache in my jaw was an egregious pain in my ear. Still thinking it was muscular, I took a couple of muscle relaxants. They did not work…time to go to the doctor.
I showed up to see the duty doctor, explained the problem and voila! Mystery solved. Not only did I have an infection in my eardrum, but also a voracious case of swimmer’s ear.
I had doubled up on possible remedies only to discover that my body had doubled up on infections. What had most likely begun as a small issue in my ear had gone unchecked and had developed into more than I could handle on my own.
How often do we let this sort of thing happen in our lives? We know that something is not right. We make deals with God or try to fill emptiness with things that hold no substance. Instead of going to the One who knows us completely.
Psalm 139:13
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
We all too often try to fix everything ourselves neglecting the wisdom of the Great Physician, the Healer who holds us in the palm of His hand…our Creator.
The next time you sense that something is wrong in your life, take it first to Him who loves you.
Psalm 147:3-5
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understand has no limit.
