Wrinkled Dresses and Scuffed Shoes
“Muuuuuuummy… I can’t find my dress.”
“Mother, where is the shoe polish.”
“Mummy, do you know where I left my shoes?”
I don’t know if this sound’s like anyone else’s Sunday morning but it is pretty much the norm at our house. Everyone is sucrrying around trying to get into their “Sunday best” and the result is not always what we would hope for.
Being so concerned with a proper turn out, we sometimes forget the reason we’re going out. I think that Satan can use the busyness of family life to distract us from the true focus of Sunday ~ the Lord’s Day. Stress about wrinkled dresses and scuffs on shoes and a little bit of breakfast left on the face of a child can overwhelm me some weeks and totally distract me from the joy of gathering together with like minded believers who are intent on celebrating their relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. I know that I’ve had Sundays where I’ve been so frustrated that I’ve missed the whole point. Sitting in church stewing over unmatched socks and ketchup stains brings no glory to God.
When I’m thinking straight, I remember the verse,
1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
Regardless of how we show up, God needs to see why we’ve come. I do believe that is important to be clean and presentable but if I had to make a choice between lopsided ponytails and concentrated time with my God, I choose God. I can always fix the ponytails later.
Today and every Lord’s Day, take the time to focus on what is most important.
Luke 10:40-42
40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.
